The Green Energy Development Campaign was launched by the Government of Kenya on 1st July 2009 in pursuit of the desire for Kenya to reap significant economic and environmental benefits from undertaking increased investment in clean energy (through a combination of efficient energy use and increased use of indigenous forms of renewable energy). Increases in clean energy are essential to the country mainly on two grounds.

The World Bank has approved a US$330 million loan for Kenya to expand electricity access and expand geothermal power generation as part of its green energy development strategy.

The project is part of over US$1.4 billion being invested in the electricity sector by the Kenyan Government, the Bank and other development partners, and will build on prior projects that support geothermal energy development that started in the 1980s.

Kenya’s interconnected power system currently has an effective power capacity of 1,289 MW during average hydrology. This comprises 719 MW from hydro, 163 MW from geothermal and 407 MW from thermal power, out of which 146 MW is supplied by an Emergency Power Producers (EPPs). The EPPs therefore produce 36% of thermal power and 11.3% of the country’s effective power capacity.
